Mount Airy, Maryland

District 22 W

"promoting citizenship with an active interest in the welfare of the community"

ABOUT US

The Mount Airy Lions Club membership is comprised of men and women of all ages and backgrounds who meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of every month at 6:45 P.M. in the lower level meeting room of the Mount Airy Fire Company located at 702 North Main Street, Mount Airy. There is a dinner served, normally followed by a short program consisting of a guest speaker followed by a short business meeting.

The elected officers of the Club (known as the "Directors") also meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00 P.M. at a firehouse meeting room. This is where the club's actual "business matters" are conducted, budgets made, decisions reached. These business decisions are then presented at the regular meeting for members to approve or disaprove. There is no meal served at the Directors meeting, however it is open to any club member and members are urged to attend if they so desire.

"Why should I be a LION?" First - it is fun to be a Lion. There is a lot of fellowship to enjoy and new friends to make..Secondly - we think it takes the type of person who simply wants to help others less fortunate than themselves. You don't need to be wealthy to be a Lion... just a person willing to find a few hours a month to help others.

Lionism comes from the heart..it is not a fraternal organization with a clubhouse and bar, requiring secret knocks at the door with special passwords or handshakes or learning a special ritual to be a member. We are simply a service club and "service" means you might have to work.

As a member of a Lions Club you get to enjoy that special satisfaction in your heart when a child whose parents can't afford a pair of glasses is able to see the blackboard and their school grades go from D's to A's. Or watching a blind person regaining the freedom of movement that a leader dog provides, or perhaps hearing a single mother with small children saying, "Thank you so very much, I didn't know who to turn to for help, God bless the Lions Club" when you drop off a months supply of food in a kitchen bare of food. If that doesn't touch something inside of your soul then don't join the Lions.
